Garrett Putnam Serviss (March 24, 1851 -- May 25, 1929)Born on March 24, 1851, in Sharon Springs, N.Y., He was educated at Cornell and Columbia University, receiving from the latter the degree of LL.B. However, his interests steered him toward a career in journalism and science, particularly astronomy. He became a prolific writer of popular articles on astronomy and other scientific subjects, first for the New York Tribune, then for the New York Sun, where he served (between 1882 and 1892) as editorial writer and night editor. In 1892, he began giving public lectures popularizing the study of astronomy. He also continued writing articles and books primarily on astronomy, taught an astronomy courses, and with S.V. White, founded the American Astronomical Society. Near the turn of the century Serviss had started writing science fiction. FictionNon-fiction |
